After breakfast, leave Hanoi behind and travel west toward the peaceful valley of Mai Chau. The road winds through rolling hills and mountain landscapes as you gradually enter a more rural part of northern Vietnam. Along the way, pause at Cun Slope, a hillside stretch of road that offers sweeping views over the surrounding mountains. Arriving in Mai Chau around midday, enjoy lunch with a local family, where home-cooked dishes reflect the flavors and ingredients of the region.
In the afternoon, set out on a relaxed walk through Pom Coong Village and nearby hamlets. Traditional stilt houses line the quiet village paths, while rice paddies stretch across the valley floor. As you stroll through the area, you may see villagers weaving textiles, tending their fields, or going about their daily routines.
Overnight in Mai Chau
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Leaving the quiet valley of Mai Chau, the journey continues toward the forested landscapes of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, a protected area known for its rice terraces, traditional villages, and unspoiled mountain scenery. The drive takes around an hour and a half, passing through small rural communities and lush countryside. Upon arrival, head to Hieu Waterfall, where clear water cascades over limestone rocks into natural pools below. Tucked within a peaceful village setting, the waterfall offers a refreshing stop surrounded by greenery.
Continue to Lan Ngoai Village, a small weaving community where local artisans continue producing traditional textiles using techniques passed down through generations. Lunch is served at a local restaurant before the afternoon brings you to Don Village, one of the most scenic villages in the reserve. Set amid sweeping rice terraces and wooden stilt houses, the village offers beautiful views across the valley. Take some time to wander along quiet paths and soak in the peaceful atmosphere before settling in at your accommodation.
Overnight in Pu Luong
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
The day begins with a visit to the Ancient Stilt House, where you’ll gain insight into traditional village life in the region. Here, you can take part in a range of everyday rural activities alongside your hosts, from feeding farm animals and processing rice by hand to learning about local crafts such as weaving. You may also discover how rice wine is traditionally made, sample local tea, and hear stories about life in the mountains.
Continue to Surprising Cave, a remarkable cave system hidden inside the limestone mountains. Stretching for nearly 20 kilometers through the interior of the mountain, the cave reveals dramatic rock formations and vast chambers shaped by nature over thousands of years.
Later, arrive at a bamboo rafting area along the Cham Stream, where a local lunch will be served. Afterward, enjoy a relaxing bamboo raft ride along the clear mountain water, surrounded by lush forest scenery. There may also be time for a refreshing swim in the cool stream.
Before returning to your accommodation, stop to see the Giant Water Wheels, ingenious wooden structures built by local villagers to lift water from the stream and channel it into nearby rice fields—an age-old irrigation method still used today.
Return to your hotel or homestay in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Overnight in Pu Luong
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
In the morning, visit Pho Doan Market, a lively local market held on Thursdays and Sundays where people from nearby villages gather to trade produce, handicrafts, and everyday goods. The market brings together members of several ethnic communities, including Kinh, Muong, and Thai, creating a colorful snapshot of life in the region.
Afterwards, leave Pu Luong Nature Reserve and travel to Ninh Binh, a journey of roughly three hours through northern Vietnam’s rural landscapes. Arriving in Tam Coc around midday, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before setting out for one of the highlights of the region.
In the afternoon, take a traditional rowing boat along the Ngo Dong River. As the boat glides quietly through the water, towering limestone karsts rise dramatically on both sides, with rice fields stretching across the valley floor. Passing through natural caves carved into the cliffs, the landscape reveals why this area is often compared to a “Halong Bay on land.”
