Itinerary

Leaving the bustle of Hanoi behind, you head about 200 kilometers northwest toward Yen Bai. The road gradually winds into the mountains, where the air turns cooler and the landscape opens into wide, peaceful valleys.

Upon arrival in Nghia Lo, visit Sa Ren Village, set in the heart of the expansive Muong Lo Valley. This long-established Thai community is known for its traditional stilt houses and a way of life closely tied to rice cultivation. As you walk through the village, you’ll catch glimpses of daily routines unfolding against a backdrop of green fields and distant hills.

In the evening, settle into a local homestay, where a home-cooked meal and the quiet atmosphere of the countryside offer a gentle introduction to life in the highlands.

Overnight in Nghia Lo, Yen Bai

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, continue your journey deeper into the mountains, heading toward Tu Le, a small valley embraced by rolling hills and rice terraces. The scenery here feels intimate and serene, especially during harvest season when the fields turn golden.

Stop by Lim Mong Village or Lim Thai Village, where H’mong communities live among steep hillsides. These villages are known for their wooden homes and dramatic terraced landscapes, offering a striking combination of culture and scenery.

The road then climbs toward Khau Pha Pass, one of the most spectacular mountain passes in Northern Vietnam. From its viewpoints, you’ll see valleys stretching far below, layered with rice terraces that shift color with the seasons.

By afternoon, arrive in Mu Cang Chai, a region famed for its rice terraces recognized as a national heritage landscape. Visit La Pan Tan Village, home to the iconic “Raspberry Hill,” part of a nationally recognized special heritage landscape, where the curved terraces create one of the most photographed scenes in Vietnam. Continue to Che Cu Nha, where the terraces appear more rugged and expansive, and where you can experience the authentic daily life of the H’mong people.

Overnight at a homestay or hotel in Mu Cang Chai.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, you continue the journey along the mountain roads toward Sapa, a town perched high in the Hoang Lien Son range, around 150km away. After arrival and some time to refresh, head out in the afternoon to explore Lao Chai and Ta Van Villages. Set along the Muong Hoa Valley, these villages lie beside a winding stream, framed by layers of rice terraces on the surrounding hills. Lao Chai is home to Black H’mong communities, while Ta Van is home to the Giay people, who live further down in the valley, in stilt or ground-level houses set close to the fields. Their clothing is more understated, adding to the village’s calm and open feel.

After the visit, you will return to Sapa town for the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

In the morning, visit Ta Phin Village, a quiet corner of Sapa where the Red Dao community has deep roots. The people here are skilled in intricate embroidery and long-standing herbal traditions. You may have the chance to try a traditional herbal bath or a soothing herbal foot soak. As you walk through the village, you’ll notice a slower, more secluded rhythm compared to other parts of Sapa.

In the afternoon, make your way to Fansipan Mountain, often referred to as the “Roof of Indochina.” Rising above the surrounding ranges, it offers sweeping views over the Hoang Lien Son mountains. Whether you reach the summit by cable car or simply take in the scenery from below, the scale of the landscape leaves a lasting impression.

Overnight in Sapa

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

An early start takes you to one of the region’s vibrant ethnic markets, depending on the day of your visit such as Bac Ha Market (Sunday), Coc Ly Market (Tuesday), Cao Son Market (Wednesday), Sin Cheng Market (Wednesday), or Lung Khau Nhin Market (Thursday).

These markets are more than places of trade, they are social gatherings where different ethnic groups, including H’mong, Dao, Tay, and Nung, come together. The atmosphere is lively and colorful, with traditional clothing, handmade textiles, fresh produce, and local specialties on display.

Later in the day, begin the journey back to Hanoi. The road winds once more through the northern highlands, offering a final look at the landscapes that have shaped this journey.

Arrival in Hanoi in the late afternoon. End of trip.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
